Two hemispheres, one distance

Test an explanation against everything it should also explain.

What we know

  • Earth’s axial tilt changes sunlight angle and daylight duration through the year. The hemispheres have opposite seasons. Earth passes its closest point to the Sun in early January.
  • For an idealised calculation, imagine a place receiving 8 daylight hours in winter and 16 in summer. Each winter hour delivers half the energy per square metre of a summer hour. Ignore clouds and other factors in this model.
