Why is the sky blue?
Sunlight and air have a lot to do with it.
The short answer
Sunlight contains different colours. Air molecules scatter some of that light in many directions, scattering blue more strongly than red. That is why blue light reaches us from much of the daytime sky.
An example to make sense of it
At sunset, light passes through more atmosphere. Much of the blue scatters away before reaching our eyes directly, allowing reddish colours to stand out.
