The map that changes proportions
A map can preserve angles while misleading area comparisons.
What we know
- Mercator preserves local angles, but not areas. Area distortion grows towards the poles. An equal-area projection preserves area while distorting other properties.
- Exercise model: compare two small regions. The area enlargement factor is 1 near the equator and 4 in the high-latitude region. This simplifies scale variation within each region.
