Why does ice float?
The same water takes up more space when it freezes.
The short answer
Under ordinary conditions, freezing water forms a structure that occupies more space. The same mass spreads over a greater volume: ice is less dense than liquid water and floats in it.
An example to make sense of it
A floating ice cube is partly submerged. Not every solid behaves like ice in its own liquid.
